Miley’s dress was inspired by The Little Mermaid, not Christian Dior.

February 25, 2009

Not to bring up Miley Cyrus twice in one week, but let’s take a moment to talk about her recent dress controversy. Everyone is freaking out because Miley’s Oscar dress, looks like a replica of the Fall/Winter 1949 Dior “Junon” dress.

 Here are the dresses:

But not to worry, everyone. Miley said the designer behind the knockoff dress, Zuhair Murad, was inspired by “The Little Mermaid,” not Christian Dior. Of course! How did we not think of this Disney connection earlier?

I know everyone hates Miley’s dress, but I loved it. Yes, I can see everyones point that it may not be appropriate for the Oscars, but regardless, I liked the dress. And yes, of course the Dior “Junon” dress is in a league of its own. It is much prettier, better proportioned and better crafted, but Christian Dior is the master, so that is to be expected.

I was looking at more photos of his designs on the Met’s Costume Institute website. He is amazing, just think of the things he would be doing if he were still around today. Wikipedia says Dior died of a heart attack after a strenuous sexual encounter. Well, at least he went out with a bang. Literally.
